Umbilical Hernia?

I have what looks like an umbilical hernia - a small protrusion immediately below my navel, approx 2cm diameter, protruding approx 1cm. There is no pain or other symptoms. Is this likely to need surgical intervention in the future? Is it better to have this done sooner rather than later? I understand that some women suffer this as a result of pregnancy, so they may be in a position to advise me. Also, if anyone had had a surgical repair on an umbilical hernia, what does it entail?

this is from a weakening in the muscles around your bellybutton that allows the contents to protrude. reasons for surgery are, improved appearence, releif of pain, and prevention of stragulation of the intestines. if you have surgery, an incision is made above or below the navel, the hernia sac are located and replaced in the abdomen, the abdominal muscle is pulled over the defect or if very large a mesh covering is used, the skin is then closed and sutures can be removed in 10 days.

never heard of it

I would get it done if i was you,if your intestine gets trapped in it you will be in hell and wish you were there.

Ummm not usre i would aks you doctor ASAP. BUT when my son was born he had one and the doctor said that it was normal and it would heal on its own, it dissappeared before he was 1. I jsut dont know how it affects an older person so talk to a doctor.

yes some women do
they usally do nothing about it unless it gets large or has pain.
they operation usally means pushing back what is making it stick out and sometimes they put a mesh or screen to hold it in.im no doctor however you might check with one that can tell you everything you need to know

Don't wait, get it fixed now, my husband had a hernia (no protrusion, no mesh). It takes a while to heal completely (2-3 weeks). Get the repair surgery done now because the tear can get bigger and bigger and that's part of your stomach or intestines poking out, it can get really bad. My husband had his surgery in the morning, I waited the whole time for him, they knocked him out. When he woke up, they let me be by his side and later that afternoon, I was able to take him home. It was hard on our small boys because they wanted to jump on daddy, but we just kept the ice packs ready to go and they gave him pain meds, so the discomfort wasn't too bad. I had to do all the lifting for a few weeks. Man those kids are heavy. But it paid off - the scar is just above his belly button, but the place where the tear was feels solid again. Good luck and don't wait - schedule the appt. with your dr. today. You'll have to take some time off work, you may be able to put in for short term disability if you are off more than a week or two, check your benefits. Also, if you wait, that repair scar is just going to get bigger and bigger.

go to a gp

Umbilical hernias in adults cause cosmetic concerns and can be electively repaired; strangulation and incarceration are unusual but, if happen, usually contain omentum rather than intestine.

hello
you need a nurse" advice
wish you health

My son had an op for an epigastric hernia when he was 10. It's similar to umbilical, just slightly lower. It was an easy procedure, done in day surgery. They always repair children's but I don't know what the view is for adults. If there is no pain they may be happy just to monitor it but otherwise leave it alone.
