Herbal medicine for insomnia?

what is the efficacy of herbal medicine remedies for insomnia?

They work for some people, and not at all for others. For still other people, they work for awhile and then stop. You pretty much have to go by trial and error. Melatonin seems to work well for most people, Valerian Root is the one that helps me the most. You could also try Chamomile tea or Magnesium capsules.

There are a couple different methods to cure insomnia naturally; One of them is Aromatherapy; Using Lavender and Chamomile oil in your bath, or on a sachet under your pillow. Oil burners work well too. If you have extreme insomnia, you can take a Homeopathic Natural or Herbal medicine to help relax your mind and body. New Sun carries all of these options, you should check it out.

chamomile and sage work very good, particularly if they are added to incense but drinking them in tea works as well.

I've heard a melatonin supplement works very well, but, take only the recommended dose.

A bad sleeping habit is caused by a number of reasons. A very good herbal remedy is called "Sleepeze". I expect your chemist will have this. Another good idea is to play Meditation music when going to bed. Have you also considered Hypno-therapy? It doesn't always work, but sometimes, something"stuck" in our mind, can lead to insomnia. Good Luck!

Inability to go to sleep or to get sleep for a period insufficient for the needs of an individual is known as insomnia. None of us can do without sleep. An infant sleeps 14 to 18 hours a day. This period is slowly reduced. An adult may be happy with 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. There are people who require 5 hours or even 4 hours of sleep in 24 hours.

Sleep has a definite purpose and that is why all mammals sleep. Lack of sleep apparently does not cause any physical harm. But anyone who gets less than his normal sleep experiences a decrease of efficiency and concentration.

Sleeping pills should be avoided. Sleeping pills taken over a long period disturb the second phase of the normal sleep, the rapid eye movement phase and thus cause harm to the person consuming them. Moreover, the effect of the drugs may last beyond the normal time for waking up and thus cause a reduction in efficiency and concentration. Sleeping pills mixed with alcohol can even be fatal. Patient should practice some technique to relax. Yoga or listening to music can help.

* It may be good, however, not to overload the stomach with food before going to sleep. A heavy meal disturbs sleep.
* A bath before going to bed is of positive help and so is exercise in the afternoon.
* In order to get good sleep taking a cup of hot milk before going to bed is a useful habit.
* Late nights affect health most adversely because, after 10:30 p.m., the body requires rest and sleep while a late dinner, social function or a musical evening running into morning hours disturb the sleep patterns which is most suitable to the human body.
* Stimulants brews like coffee or tea should be avoided in the late evening. Coffee after dinner has an adverse effect on sleep. Smoking of cigarettes also stimulates and thus keeps us awake.
* The sleeping environment should be as comfortable as possible, neither too hot nor too cold. Beds, which are too soft, are not conducive to sound sleep. The bed should be firm, hard and of a proper size.
* Drinking Kava kava a few hours before bedtime reduces stress, tension, anxiety and relaxes muscles. It helps to fall asleep deeper and to rest more.
* Prepare a mixture by adding1 tsp. chamomile flowers,1 tsp. Hops,1 tsp. valerian root and1 cup of boiling water. Steep for 45 minutes, strain and drink 1 hour before bedtime.
* Wake up at the same time everyday no matter when you got to sleep.
* Avoid high protein meals for dinner; instead try to take complex carbohydrates in the dinner.
* Drink a cup of warm milk with honey, nutmeg can also be added. The tryptophan in milk helps in sleeping.
* Thiamine or vitamin B is of special significance in the treatment of insomnia.
* Lettuce is beneficial in the treatment of insomnia as it contains a sleep-inducing substance, called 'lectucarium'. Boil one tablespoon of seeds in half a litre of water, till it is reduced by one-third. It is very useful in preventing insomnia.
* The patient should take plenty of curd and massage it on the head. This will induce sleep.
* The mixture of bottle gourd juice and sesame oil in 50:50 ratio acts as an effective medicine for insomnia.
* Prepare a tea by boiling about 375 ml of water in a vessel and adding a teaspoon of aniseed. The water should be covered with a lid and allowed to simmer for fifteen minutes. It should then be strained and drunk hot or warm. The tea may be sweetened with honey, and hot milk may also be added to it. This tea should be taken after meals or before going to bed.
* Honey is also an effective remedy to induce sleep. Two teaspoonful of honey should be mixed in warm water and taken before going to bed.
* Take 1 tsp juice of celery leaves with stalks and 1 tsp of honey.
* Have raw onion salad in the dinner.
* Take 2 tsp of fenugreek leaves juice with 1 tsp of honey at bed times daily
* Prepare a mixture by adding two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with one cup of honey and store this mixture in an airtight container. Take two spoonful of this mixture whenever necessary.
* Sleeping with your head pointing north can improve the quality of your sleep.

If all else fails, take one benadryl. One.

Follow Amembals tips, Melatonin, lavendar, and chamomile work for me.

Valerian root is the best thing to try first there is no side effects. KavaKava also works well but your body can get used to it over a short period of time.

Melatonin WITH Valerian root, start with small doses......at least 3mg of Melatonin, anything less is just for supplement, not sleep

Valerian Root, Chamomile, Lavander.

There's also a natural remedy called "Sleep Rescue". You can get it at the Vitamin Shoppe. You spray it twice on your tongue before you go to bed. Its a non-narcotic and made with all natural flowering herbs.

I second the melatonin but there could be side effects....

Also, Valerian works very well....it is a supplement and it also calms anxiety...it works the same way as xanax or lorazapam.

You could also try Benadryl.

Make sure you check with your primary care physician before taking Valerian or Melatonin if you are taking other prescription medications because this could make for a bad reaction.

Get at least 30 minutes of excercise a day but don't do it within four hours of going to sleep because this could actually keep you awake longer (there have been studies on this). The morning is the best time to do this.

Good luck!

One more thing, purchase some lavender oil and an oil burner and burn about an hour before you want to fall asleep....you would be amazed at how well aromatherapy works....but DO make sure you use the real thing (oils) and don't go buy some cheap room spray or lotion at a place like bath and body works because that stuff doesn't have real lavender oil in in....plus, it smells good!!

I have some sparatic insomnia now and then, and I find that chamomile tea and passionflower tea help a lot. I personally use Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Tea. Just brew a warm cup of it, and get entirely ready for bed. Then drink the entire glass right before you turn out your light. I don't use passionflower tea myself, but it is a popular essence for sleeping problems. I would also suggest getting some lavender, chamomile, and bergamot essential oils to put on the bottom of your feet, and use all of them for aromatic scents. From a nutritional stand point, insomnia can be a deficiency in elemental trace minerals. Find at your local health food store a liquid trace mineral supplement that has all 72 trace minerals in it. Since there could be a deficiency, take double the recomended amount for the first few days. For more info, go to www.healthscantechnique.com. I hope that helps! Sweet dreams!! Ciao!!!

you may be able to find what you are looking for at Silky Scents. They have a free recipe section that is easy to follow, or an already made blend section that they tell you how to use it.
