Why do people treat OTC drugs and herbal medicine differently than prescription medications? |
Medicinal substances, whether they are prescription meds, OTC drugs, or herbal formulas, impact the body's physiology. Medicinal substances, whether they are prescription meds, OTC drugs, or herbal formulas, impact the body's physiology. I beliieve people think that, if it wasn't necessary for a doctor to prescribe a medication, then it must be safer to use than prescription medications. Of course, they forget that OTC drugs that are commonly used today were once, themselves, prescription drugs, and that some pharmaceuticals are made from plants. So, it is out of ignorance that people think OTCs and herbs should be treated as "safe" to do what you please with them. (If anyone else is reading this, please note that it is possible to overdose on OTCs, so it is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions on the label--unless prescribed otherwise by a medical doctor.) You are making many assumptions. The dangers of prescription drugs are either more well known, more severe, or more prone to abuse/addiction. That is why they are prescription to begin with. While OTC drugs/herbs can have side effects, they are usually not severe or life threatening when taking the recommended dosage. However, your point about people assuming the little works, a lot is better, is valid. Sometimes people don't need what they're taking at all and its just a waste. But their ignorance is their own personal responsibility, and if they cant follow simple directions on the container then thats their problem and a visit to the MD over supplements, while recommended, is often more hassle and cost than its worth. Sorry, too many questions. Try asking one at a time. I don't want to write a book in here. whats the difference if you go to the doctor he gives you a prescription drug, he treats you like a ginkgo to see if it works, I find that the herbs work better for me Mostly because of the fear of the unknown. |
