Hepatitis A and B vaccination for travel? |
I am not uninformed on medical subjects. But this is confusing me. The advice on the CDC/State Department travel web sites used to be that you need hepatitis B protection for places where you might get dirty food, but hepatitis A is only transmissible through blood or sexual activity, so you don't need to get that if you're neither sexually active nor inject drugs. Now the advice is to get both if you might be exposed to contaminated food. Can anyone explain this change to me? Thanks so much -- I need to get ready for travel. You are misinformed concerning Hep A. It is most commonly transmitted by the fecal-oral route, that is to say contaminated food or water. I think your information is relevant for Hep C. A dual vaccine is available for Hep A&B. If you are travelling, check with a local travel medicine clinic to determine what other prophylactic medications you might require. Definitely. My advice is just to get both vaccinations. Better safe than sorry! go to a doctor and get your vaccines I won't be so concerned, just eat in nice restaurants and don't drink tap water. I've had B and I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but why take a chance? Get 'em both. Hep A is also transmitted through contaminated food or water. |
