Hepatitis C? |
I have recently found out that someone in my husbands family has Hepatitis C. She was just diagnosed but was told by the Dr that she has had it for some time due to some liver damage. I have checked a few sites for info on it but haven't found too much. Can anyone tell me more about Hepatitis C or refer me to a site tahat can? For easy to understand information go to www.c-level.org.uk, read the leaflets that you can also download and read the fact sheets, there is a lot of very good information there. Try going here: hepatitis C is caused by virus similar to that of hepatitis B which is more spread. it is transfered by blood and blood products, injections(drug users), and by sexual intercourse. it causes infection of the liver and in many cases it goes into chronic condition. one of the main concern here is the development of liver cancer over time. there is some kind of treatment for this disease. What do you want to know specifically? I had a friend with it, and a co-worker. It can be treated with a drug called interferon-and i probably spelled that wrong, but treatment lasts several months, and the patient loses his or her hair, must avoid sunlight, becomes sick and depressed and is pretty much out of comission the whole time, unable to work, and still there is a chance that it won't cure the disease. The co-worker took the treatment and was cured of it, but for my friend it wasn't an option since he had a history of depression and drug abuse and it would have risen his risk of suicide or mental breakdown. And sometimes people die from it, and sometimes they live with it for a long, diet resricted life. It can hide in the sysem for ten years before any symptoms arise, and that increases the chances of it being spread sexually or by blood contamination. |
