Hepatitis B and Pregnancy?

My wife has Chronic Hepatitis B and she is 8 weeks pregnant. What things can we do to assure that the baby is born healthy?
Thanks so much.

Sirtitis, a small proportion of babies clear the virus naturally from their systems within 6 months. But many babies born from hep B+ mothers develop chronic hep B themselves and even though many may not experience symptoms, are carriers. The good news is that there is treatment available and you should seek referral to a paediatric gastroenterologist or hepatologist to assess and manage your child if he/she doesn't naturally clear it. Your child may not need to be on medication at all and may only need to be monitored at intervals by a doctor. The important thing to remember is that it's a manageable health condition and there's no reason your child can't enjoy a long and healthy life - as long as they're under the care of a good doctor and educated about hep B, its transmission and how to manage it.

I'm guessing this is your first child, and you haven't had your first appointment with the obstetrician yet. If you haven't already scheduled an appointment that would be the first thing to do. When you go to the appointment you can talk to your doctor or OB. They deal with scenarios like this all the time, and will be able to give you detailed information, and make both of you more comfortable with the situation

Please make sure you go to all of your OB check ups! And be honest with your doctor! Tell her or him all they need to know to insure that your wife and unborn child stay as healthy as possible.
This is a serious question and it is good that you are asking it, but it really should be followed up by a medical doctor who specializes in your wife's situation.
