Why is the incidence of hemophilia, color blindness, and baldness common to men? |
applying sex-linked traits and genetic disorders? Because women have 2 X chromosomes so they can just carry it if only one X chromosome is damaged, or they sort of have a backup. If both X chromosomes are damaged they will have the disease. However men have an X and a Y chromosome so if the X chromosome has the defect then they will have it as theres no "back up" from the other chromosome. So if a man has the disease its come from his mothers X chromosome, as when a child is formed they get the Y chromoseom from the father and the X chromosome from the mother. If the mother carries the mutation its a 50% chance, if she has the disease, its an 100% chance he'll get it. Hope thats explained ok, im bad at explaining things! females carry the genes -- men end up with the diease/conditions -- gotta love dem girls huh? This question gets asked alot its kinda hard to explain basically its all to do with the 23rd chromosome (the sex genes) xy = man, xx= women. The fathers gene always determines the sex of the child if he passes on a Y sex cell this will equal xy male, if he passes on a X it will equal XX female. The disease hemophilia is carried on the female sex cell which she passes on to her son XY therefore the son becomes infected with the disease and will most likely need a drug shuch as worfrin which is used to make blood clot, all his life. A daughter can carry the disease but will not be infected it is extremly rare for a female to have hemophilia but is possible. i hope that helped a little bit im not very good at explaining genetics The genes that cause these conditions are linked to the male chromosome, apparently, so are more likely to be passed down through the male line. They're not "common" in men, just more common than in women. Just like sickle cell anemia is much more often found in Blacks than in any other race, and Tay-Sachs is more often found in Cajuns and Jews. |
