What tests are performed for an access in the arm for hemodialysis?

In order to have an access made in the arm for hemodialysis, what tests are to be performed ?

My husband is on hemodialysis. He had to have a ultrasound scan on his veins to do vein mapping. then you have to wait for the access to mature before it can be used. If you know you are going to be on dialysis in the very near future, then it would be good to have the fistula made before hand, so that it has time to be mature.

This way you wouldn't have to have a temporary access in your neck which can have it's own set of problems.
