How long can most people live on hemodialysis and they have diabetes?

My mom has been on hemodialysis in the hospital for 3 weeks now - they have taken off about 70lbs of fluid from her. They are doing it 3-4days a week for 3-4 hours each time. They said it is a slow process for her because she has a heart problem as well and her BP drops too low...I have heard people can live on it for about 5 years....anyone else have any family or friends that have been on hemodialysis?
thanks.

People have lived up to 25 years and counting on hemo. It varies greatly and depends on the overall condition of the person, at what stage renal failure they're in as well as which type (ARF vs CRF) and what other conditions he/she may have that could complicate matters. If what you're really asking is how long your mother may live, I couldn't say. I don't know her medical history. In any case, I strongly suggest that she speak to her nephrologist, cardiologist and endocrinologist (better to speak to her attending physician who coordinates her care) or, if you are the responsible party for her, then you speak to the doctor about her prognosis.

no i havent but just pray for your mom i will!!!
