When to draw blood specimen for patients on hemodialysis?

Depends. In the chronic setting ,general rule is before dialysis. Monthly an adequacy test is done, so their will be an added specimen at the end of dialysis. In the acute setting, it could be either before, during or after. It depends on how the doctor orders it. Just so long as he makes his changes in prescription, medications knowing when the sample was taking. This is important. Dialysis RN in Califas.

It depends on the test. If you want to transfuse blood during the procedure then it is always best to get the sample before or at the beginning of dialysis. Tests for K, BUN and CRE should be drawn afterwards.
