I have had at least 5 hepatitis B vaccines yet I have failed to develop the antigens. Is this common? |
I am a hemodialysis patient and this concerns me. Why am I failing to develop antigens? I am a Dialysis RN. In part it is because of your chronic medical condition, ESRD. Yet, even "healthy" people can receive the Hep B series without developing anti-body's. This is certainly a possibility as with any vaccine,...that your immune system doesn't react to it & no anti-body's develope. It basically depends on your Dr. & what his belief on the literature & study's that are out there. Many Dr's believe wether you develope titers more than 10 or not, if you recieved the vaccine, ...then you are protected. Others repeat the series again, only a 2nd time & retest for anti-body's. If none after the 2nd series, then it is documented that you are a non-reactor to the vaccine. You also have to consider the dosage given & was it given in the correct time frame. Dialysis patients recieve twice the recommended dosage than the "healthy" general populations, consisting of ( in my facility ) 3 injections a month apart ( 40 mcg each ) & one booster ( 40 mcg ) three months after the 3rd, totaling 4. The general population is 20 mcg, only 3, usually without any booster needed. Hope this helps. It is important however to have this vacine for all ESRD patients due to your high risk of infection. Good luck! :) vaccines in general dont promise anything... you are NOT supposed to develop the antigen (HBsAg)silly, you will develop the antibody only (anti-HBsAb)& thats what you need. |
