Microbiologists out there....?

whats the best type of agar for growing Helicobacter pylori from a stool specimen?

hmmm campy medium...interesting one doc, will try that one.

I promise I won't quote some paper from the literature ;).

Two media are good for H. pylori:

Skirrow's medium or CAMPY medium.

Both are enriched and selective for the growth of many spiral-shaped gram-negative rods. The key to growing these guys is the atmosphere and temperature though. They need a microaerophilic atmosphere with 5-10% CO2 and no more than 5% O2 and the rest as N2. They also need to be at 42C for a minimum of 2 days.

Good luck!

There was some research done by a group in Venezuela about this exact thing. Their interest was in isolating it from marine mollusks. In their study they developed an HP isolation agar. You will have to look for the paper to get the exact ingredients, but I can provide you with the authors and titile.

Good luck!

Contrary to popular belief, Heliobator pylori is the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers; not stress.so they like warm damp environments
