Help heartburn?

my sister has heartburn and tums have not helped what can she do.....

It may be something she is eating. Try to rule things out. But in the mean time don't lay flat and a glass of milk will help.

If you suffer from frequent heartburn, you know that heartburn is very likely to pay an unwelcome visit to your holiday feast. To help ensure the heartburn doesn't take up residence this year, try the following tips.

Don't Overeat
A full stomach can put extra pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which will increase the chance that some of this food will reflux into the esophagus.

Relax when you eat.
The holiday season can be very stressful. Stress increases the production of stomach acid, so holiday meals can increase episodes of heartburn. To reduce the chances of heartburn, make meals a pleasant, relaxing experience with the following tips:

* Sit down while eating
* Eat slowly
* Chew completely
* Play soothing music

For more information on stress and heartburn, check out these relaxation tips.

Avoid Lying Down Immediately After Eating.
Avoid lying down for at least three hours after eating.
Lying down with a full stomach can cause stomach contents to press harder against the LES, which tends to relax when a person lays down, causing an increased chance of refluxed food.

Avoid fatty foods.
High-fat foods can increase acid secretion, decrease LES pressure, or slow down the emptying of the stomach. To learn what is safe to eat and what should be avoided, please see the following resources:

* Safe foods for heartburn sufferers

* Foods heartburn sufferers should avoid

* Foods heartburn sufferers should eat only in moderation

Avoid caffeinated soda and coffee.
Caffeine relaxes the LES, increasing the risk of acid reflux.

Avoid Alcohol.
Alcohol increases the amount of acid the stomach produces. Please see these further tips on alcohol and heartburn.

Avoid Chocolate and mints.
These have two affects on heartburn sufferers: They relax the LES, and they increase the amount of acid the stomach produces.

Chew gum after eating.
Chewing gum or sucking on a lozenge for 30 minutes after meals increases the production of saliva. This saliva can relieve heartburn by bathing the esophagus and lessening the effects of acid refluxed into the esophagus by washing it back down to the stomach.

Best natural remedy is to eat a stalk of celery.
Believe it, it works!
The celery is alkaline which nuetralizes the acid that's causing your sisters heartburn.
And, it works much quicker then any over-the-counter drug.

Paypaya enzymes. They are available at wal mart.

My mom has heart burn alot and when it is bad and she can't get rid of it she puts 1/4 tsp. of baking soda and 6 oz. of water.
If you cant do that get a sprite, 7-up really cold and drink 4-6 ounces and it will make you burp and that will help.

sis may benefit from drinking water or wine half an hour before eating.
may also benefit from going for a walk after the meal.
when I get bad heartburn I smoke cigarettes and drink black coffee, no sugar. works fine for me!
