Medications for osteoarthritis in case of heart disease -valve replacement - 81 yrs old person. Thank you!?

Surgery is out of question due to her age and the fact that she had the heart surgery 20 yrs ago. So if you now about any safe (no side effects) pain killers? Thank you!

I regret to say there is no medication without any side effects at all. Most medications can have side effects, be they common or rare, mild or severe.

It depends what other medications your old person is having and what other problems, if any, she has. If she is on anticoagulants (possible after heart surgery, though unlikely after 20 years), then she could bleed easily, and none of the aspirin-like drugs (diclofenac, ibuprofen, flurbiprofen, etc) would be suitable. These would also not be preferable if she has asthma or breathing problems. If she has neither of these situations, aspirin may be best at moderate doses.

Older people are more likely to get side effects from any drug because the drug is held in the body longer (less efficient liver and kidneys with age).

The best thing is to get her to see her doctor, who should ideally weigh the risks of treating the arthritis against the dangers of not treating it, with each possible medication, then decide on the best one.

Hope this helps.

Tyelonl makes an arthritis med. Along with Advil and the rest. They all have one just for arthritis.
