Do cardiologists perform heart surgery then or what are heart surgeons called?

Are cardiologists just heart specialists or do they perform heart surgery as a main thing?If they don't, what are heart surgeons called then?

Cardiac surgeons. Cardiologists like neurologists specialize in the clinical non-surgical nature of an abnormality.

Cardio-Thoracic surgeons perform heart surgery. This is their "main thing." All other heart issues go to the Cardiologist....

I am glad that you asked this question. With all the different doctors and their different specialties it is difficult to keep them all straight.

Cardiologist deal with the mechanical, chemical and electrical aspects of the heart. Within this specialty their are sub-specialties that deal with each aspect of the above mentioned areas of cardiology.

Cardio-thoracic surgeons. These are doctors that perform surgery on the heart and chest. They not only perform by-pass surgery but also perform heart transplants, lung surgeries, lung transplants, surgery on the vessels in the chest such as aortic aneurysms.

If you are thinking about a career in medicine think about this first. After you spend the 6 to 8 years in undergrad and med school, then you have at least 4 years of residency to be board certified in cardiology. To be a cardio-thoracic surgeon you have 5 years of general surgery and another 2 years in cardiology and pulmonology (lung studies).
