My daughter had open heart surgery? |
my daughter had open heart surgery a year ago she is sixteen now her scar down her chest is still very pink and lumpy does anybody know how long it takes for it to sink into a smooth scar. i have asked her local doctor but he just said time will tell. she has stopped going swimming because she thinks people are looking at her . I had similar surgery at age 13 and further heart surgery about 21 months ago so I have plenty of war wounds! I am so pleased that you think my answer is helpful to your daughter - I wish her all the luck in the world :0) Report It Not sure but the only cream that will truly work is "Creme de la mer" I have no experience of scars on chests, but I had a large lumpy scar from an operation at the bottom of my abdomen which was fairly visible for a couple of years. Now, you wouldn't know it was there (although I can feel it as a ridge). Try arnica cream and calendula homeopathic remedies. I feel for her, I had a op and the scar took 2 years to fade, I was older, she is young usually scars fade quicker in younger people. You can always consult a plastic surgeon. My best friend was born with a large birthmark on her forehead that her parents had surgically removed, leaving her with a massive scar. When she hit her late teens, she had a plastic surgeon turn that massive scar into a much smaller, less noticeable one with a minor surgical procedure. hey...there is nothing to be shame off...people love to stare...so what...my cousin had open heart surgery too..and yeah..the scar will fade way in time ...Tell her go and swim.. 16 is such a fragile age, unfortunately your doc is right. Everyone is different and heals at different times. She is young and will heal up faster than older people, but the scar will always be there. Use cocoa butter to keep it moisturized, and find a different swim suit, with all the new styles, there has to be something that will cover that scar, (try a speedo one piece) My niece went through the same thing at 14, she is now to the point she doesn't care what people think, but that takes time. (She says its a good conversation starter with the boys lol) Good luck I read somewhere that Bio oil is good for fading scars... not getting eradicating them rid but fading them. Try your local health food shop..you can also buy it on line. My grandson had open heart surgery when he was an infant and it only took about 8 mos. but babies grow sooo fast. Much slower for a 16 year old. My grandson is not 7 and he alternates between covering it up and other time he just doesn't care at all, almost shows it off. I think it will take a couple of years for the scar to be less noticeable and it's a shame that she's giving up something that she loves to do because of other people. While it may not be the most fashionable, some of the 1 piece "speedo" type suits may offer her the feeling of being more covered. Tell her to enjoy the new lease on life and enjoy doing the activities she likes. Good luck Had my op in 2003, the scar is almost not noticeable. Wish I had the words to make her ignore all the feelings of being stared at. stop!..........no creams........absolutley no creams...what are you people thinking!....she must let the scar heal by its self.....she shouldnt care about what people think about the scar...they are worst things out there than a scar on the body.....they are people with extra body parts who dont even care.........it would heal by its self... if it doesnt go fully in 4 years then think about other methods like surgery or cocoa butter or something thats herbal no chemicals. chemical tend to change the skin pigmentation sometimes just right or sometime too extreme and makes the skin look old faster~ love how you look for you are your own worst enemy * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * It sounds as though the scar has developed 'keloid' tissue, and may require treatment from an appearance point-of-view. I had a triple bypass, and the scar on my chest managed to get infected, andf some 3 years later it is still ugly and raised, yet the scar on my leg, where they took the implant-veins from, healed almost immediately, and is virtually invisible, which is just as well, seeing it is 18" long. Wow, what a young age to have to go through that big of a surgery. That alone is trauma enough...then being 16 and all that appearance pressure she's getting. My heart goes out to her and the whole family. It fades but never becomes invisible. The amount of scarring really depends on the individual. some people develop scars more easily than others. my wife got the zipper at 3, is now 22 - still plainly visible, as a pink line, i dont notice it, but guys and girls, like to ask what it is when shes wearing low cut stuff, neither of us mind at all, i wouldnt worry about it fading.. it will get smoother if she has a lot of scar tissue you can get oinment to rub ito it it will go smooth my lad had open heart surgery when he was 5 at birmingham childrens hospital he is now 24 the scar is smooth but still prominent tell your daughter not to worry about other people as long as she is ok thats the main thing thats what we told our lad It took my husbands scar 2 maybe 3 years to turn white. It's still lumpy though. It's been six years since his double bypass. He was older, 39, and younger people heal faster and usually with less lasting scaring. it is more likely permanent -- but i don't think she should worry too much about it. i have an incision in my abdomen that i used to be really conscious about, but when i see other people's stitches, it doesn't bother me at all... so im guessing that it's just all in the mind. maybe people are just curious as to why she has a scar in her chest, but nothing that should be scrutinized about. i'd say that if anybody were to make fun of her because of that -- they've got to be the dumbest people on earth. |
