Risks with type 1 diabetes and heart surgery?

What are the risks of bypass heart surgery and type one diabetes?

I actually underwent the prcedure in 1997, for triple bypass surgery, and have been a type 1 for 34 years. Provided that health is good otherwise, the risks are little different than for a non-diabetic undergoing bypass surgery. (At least that's what the cardiothorasic surgeon told me)You may spend a little more time undr the effects of anaesthesia, and on a ventilator in recovery, but, otherwise, the risks are no different. Most important, is to maintain good control of your glucose levels.

Just make sure the entire surgical team knows you have diabetes.
They will check your sugar during the operation and if needed they can give you sugar or insulin via IV line.

Good luck.
