Name of medication lowering body temperature during heart surgery?

If anyone knows what this chemical compound is called? It lowers the body's temperature during heart surgery?

There is no specific medication used to lower the body temperature during open heart surgery .

The heart-lung machine has the blood passing through a temperature controlled heat exchanger electrical machine that cools down or warms up the circulatory blood as is required.

There is the Trinitrin (Nitrate) group of drugs that causes vasodilatation of the body's vascular tree and this vasodilatation may indirectly help to hasten the temperature equalisation between the circulating blood and the body tissues.

Hope this answers your question.

P.S. Following your e-mail; the only other compound we use during cardiac surgery to cool and paralyse the heart muscle is 'cold cardioplegia solution' . This is usually done by direct infusion into the coronary arteries by one of the rotary pumps of the heart-lung machine.
The 'cold cardioplegia solution ' is composed of various chemicals including potassium, sodium , bicarbonate etc mainly used 1.to stop the heart 2. to cool down the heart muscle directly so as to lower its metabolic rate and demand.

I hope this addendum completes the answer.

No. Doesn't do it for me. I'm sure I saw something else. Why should a community vote for something it's not interested in or asking about? Report It

It's not a medication. During cardiac bypass, the pump machine cools the blood which it circulates.
