Heart Murmur found?

I am a 16 yr old female that undertook a medical that i needed to have for a license. everything went fine and i am a healthy and fit young person.

now, i had an electrocardiogram done and the nurse found something irregular and told me it was just anxiety. after calming down, everything was normal. i then went to the doc and she found a heart murmur using the stethescope.

i am really scared now. nothing showed on the ECG so why do i have murmur? was it just nerves again? because the doc never let me calm down and my heart was racing.

i am going for an echocardiogram soon, but i am really scared so some reassurance that it is probably nothing would be good.

I have no health issues and have never had a problem with my heart or felt i have a problem.

the murmur was a mild systolic if that enables anyone to tell me more

Please see the web page for more details on Heart murmurs. You can hear various heart murmurs through your speaker if you click the concerned diagrams (see Merck web page). Some heart murmurs need serious medical attention.

Heart Murmurs are in general nothing to be worried about. I had one when I was younger and grew out of. Just go through with the medical tests, but I am sure you are fine.

you will be fine, try not to worry too much as this will only set off your anxiety more,do not be scared and try to think positive,i know how hard this must be for you to go through, but as you said, you have no heath issues,so i'm sure it's nothing severe, just let the doc do her job and in the meantime, relax, merry xmas :)

I grew up with a heart murmur and had to go to Children's Hospital every 3 years for ultrasounds. The murmur never negatively affected me. I have had other cardiac issues throughout the years, all unrelated to the heart murmur. Fortunately I'm fine now. I asked on a recent visit to my cardiologist about the heart murmur and I was told that they aren't so readily diagnosing heart murmurs these days. They now have at least 4 criteria that have to be met first. I would have to ask you if the doctor actually heard something (since the nurse isn't the doctor... she shouldn't be doing the final diagnosis and telling the doc). Anything out of the ordinary should be considered at the doc's office, but perhaps doesn't require an anxiety attack. Try and just take things as they come, I'm sure you're fine.

You do need to make sure that your parents are with you (or an adult) to help you hear what the doctor is telling you. This helps you process and also answer their questions better as well. Good luck to you :)
