Could my heart murmur, in addition to my family history, be a cause for concern?

I am a fourteen year old female with a heart murmur. It was just discovered about 2 years ago. I went to a pediatric cardiologist and she said there was nothing wrong. I also have a mother and two aunts, and a grandmother with high blood pressure. One of my aunts has cardiomyopathy and diabetes, also. I do not follow a healthy diet and I add a lot of salt and butter on almost everything I eat. I know this is not healthy, and with my family history and murmur I probably shouldn't eat that way. Even though my murmur was not malignant, could it have changed, snd is it something to worry about?

Hi there.
Some murmurs are really harmless. Since you have already consulted a pediatric cardiologist, i presume a 2D echocardiography was done? And if the pediatric cardiologist assured you that nothing is wrong? then will have to believe her.

It would be better to know what was the diagnoses given to you? was it a trivial mitral valve prolapese, or was it really a non-clinical or non-significant murmur>

I dont think you need to worry at this point in your life, what your aunts and grandma had. Their heart conditions most probably is due to atherosclerotic heart disease, which is due to cholesterol deposits on blood vessel linings. You are too young to have this. although it would be best of course to shy away from the fats and other dairy products.

You don't need to worry, most heart murmurs are benign, including yours.

I would think about how to eat healthier. The eating habits you develop now will follow you the rest of your life. Exercise would also be a good idea and don't ever start smoking.
