Anyone with a heart murmur???????

Years ago I was diagnosed with a heart murmur. After a follow up ultrasound I was told that for the most part I was fine and no medications are necessary. Every now and then I experience heart palpatations and it's pretty scary... it feels like someone is knocking the breath out of you. Doctors still say I'm fine.... what really makes me nervous is that last year a co worker (who was a dear friend of mine) died from her heart condition (mitral valve prolapse... she was only 38).
Anyone else out there with a heart murmur? Do you have similar symptoms? How do you handle your condition??

A heart murmur is an extra or unusual sound heard during your heartbeat. Murmurs range from very faint to very loud and sometimes sound like a whooshing or swishing noise. Normal heartbeat sounds鈥?quot;lub-DUPP" or "lub-DUB"鈥攁re the valves closing as blood moves through the heart.
A heart murmur is not a disease; it is a sound that the doctor hears with a stethoscope. It may be normal, or it could be a sign that something may be wrong. Most heart murmurs are harmless. Some are signs of heart problems, especially if other signs or symptoms of a heart problem are present.
Abnormal murmurs
A person with an abnormal murmur usually has other signs or symptoms of a heart problem. Most abnormal murmurs in children are due to congenital heart defects鈥攈eart defects present at birth. In adults, abnormal murmurs are most often due to heart valve problems caused by infection, disease, or aging.
Mitral valve prolapse can be a congenital condition or caused by disease or aging (which falls under abnormal murmurs). The heart valve doesn't close sufficiently & this makes problems for your circulation.
If you're still concerned, I would make an apt. with a cardiologist & also have a stress test done.

one of my best friends is only 10 yrs. old and has a murmur, and he isn't overweight but is easily out of breath. I had never heard of a heart murmur until like last week. good luck!!

I have had a heart murmer all of my life and I am now in my 60's. I had a full work up on my heart less than a month ago and though the Dr. mentioned the murmer, he said that my heart is perfectly healthy. If you are having palpitations, that could be arrythmia and not related to the murmer. Go to a cardiologist and get the works. You need to know.
