If you have a heart murmur can you take birth control pills? |
I just started this new birth control regimen called Yaz. They're a 28 day pill set, with only 4 sugar pills. I've heard good things about it. Thats not my issue. My issue is that when I gave birth to my 6 year old son, my doctor told me that because of my heart murmur, I shouldn't take birth control pills. I had lots of problems with palpitations and shortness of breath when I was pregnant because of the murmur. Only certain hormones affect cardiovascular health. Different birth control pills contain different hormones or different combinations of hormones, so as long as you're not on a pill with hormones that affect your heart, you're good (as far as which hormones affect what, I don't really know, I'm not a doctor). I'm certain if your doctor checked with a cardio specialist, you're fine. No, I was on ortho-novum 1+35 and I had a heart murmur. Okay, with that birth control I am showing my age. I was getting at the strength of what I was on versus the newer and not as risky ones of today. |
