Concerta and Heart Murmur? |
Has any one been diagnosed with a heart murmur after being on Concerta? My son was just diagnosed by the 'fill in doctor' with a murmur. We have an appt to see his normal dr for a second opinion as he is 9 and has never been diagnosed. He's been on ADHD meds since he was 5 with no side effect. Anyone have any insight? Thanks! Without having looked up Concerta for side effects (I do administer a lot of it at camp in the summer) I'd have to say they are not directly related. Concerta helps kids focus and level off the effects of ADD. A heart murmur is a mechanical challenge associated with one of the valves of the heart. Should a particular valve not open or close correctly it creates the 'whooshing' sound heard with a stethescope. The second opinion is certainly in order for any type of serious diagnosis like that. Young kids do grow out of them (I'm one of them) but you don't know that unless you keep an eye on it with an attentive doctor. The murmur is not a dangerous, life-altering condition but don't let a doctor completely blow it off either. I hope this helps. Jeff the nurse in Nashville. |
