Heart murmur and medication before dentist? |
i've had a heart murmur every since i've been born and every time i go to the dentist i have to take medicine because of it. anyone know why When people have dental procedures, some bacteria from their mouths typically get in their bloodstream. Usually a person's immune system will clear them in short order. When you have heart valves that are abnormal in some way, it increases the odds that bacteria can stick in your heart, and begin to grow there, causing endocarditis. Taking antibiotics before a dental procedure helps keep this from happening. Lowers your risk of getting rheumatic fever. Ambivalence is right on the money. As of April 2007 the AHA has dramatically changed the pre-med. requirements and many that had formerly needed them no longer do. Check with your MD and see if you are still required. Heart murmurs are no longer required by the new guidelines, but check with the doctor first. Hi, Bacteria gets disrupted during dental treatment and if these bacteria get into your bloodstream during treatment they are quite harmful and you need the antibiotic coverage to ensure that if that happens you have the help you need to fight them off as you are more susceptible to these bacteria due to your condition. It's better to be safe than sorry. A couple pills and away you go....easy squeezy. Each person with heart murmurs are treated on an individual basis and need to check with their medical doctor to see if it is necessary. And yes the guidlines have changed recently as to who needs antibiotic coverage you should go get re-evaluated by your medical doctor. Your medical doctor decides if you need coverage and your dentist follows their recommendations. |
