I have a heart murmur, is there a chance my heart could just stop?

I have a heart murmur, is there a chance my heart could just stop? I can notice the iregular beat, no joke. And whats worse is that it trys to compensate for the beat it just missed.

Your heart won't stop suddenly due to a heart murmur. There are 2 types of heart murmur's: "Innocent" or Abnormal ones. An Innocent murmur is present in healthy adults and children and usually show no symptoms, an Abnormal one, however, is usually present at birth (congenital) and can cause problems due to a sick, diseased, or aging valve. Those irregular beats you are feeling sound like either PAC's or PVC's, or premature "skipped" beats. This occurs when either the ventricles or the atria get stimulated before they should and prematurely beat before they should, causing the sensation of a pause in heart beat; in almost every case, there is a compensatory pause then a stronger beat (the stronger beat or thump shows a healthy heart, and this is associated with a PVC. If these happen to you more than 6 times a minute, go to your doctor and tell him, testing might be pursued to find out why these are happening.

have you actually seen a cardiologist and gotten a diagnosis? If you are having an irregular heart beat it needs checking and maybe meds starting.

I had heart murmur as a kid im ok now a lot of people can have that.Dont worry about it.

Heart Murmur is a generic term, used to describe a HUGE range of defects, from a minor, irregular beat, to damage left following a cardiac arrest. It isn't really a 'condition' in it's own right, and does not define the problem, or even the part of the heart which may be affected by said 'murmur'.
Please speak to your doctor, to ascertain which condition is present, and ways you can continue to lead a normal, healthy life. =)

A heart murmur is actually the term used to describe the abnormal sound made by turbulent flow of blood through a heart valve. The cause can be narroring or leakage of any of the valves but the aortic and mitral vales are most commonly involved. A murmur can also be heard in perfectly healthy people so it's impossible to tell you if this is a big issue or not. Irregular beats are another matter and are very comon. Again the causes range from the benign (if irritating) through to the more serious. In your case I suspect you are describing ectopic beats which are unnerving but not at all dangerous. See a doctor for a full diagnosis and hopefully reassurance.

it depends on which valve is affected. some are more 'crucial' to certain functions than others. i have a mitral valve prolapse and other than palpitations, irregularities like you describe etc there is no danger to my life, no danger of just stopping and in fact is quite common. you need to consult your cardiologist to get more information.

Isn't that what a heart attack is...?

My mum has a murmur. They say sh'e always had it. She was diagnosed at 61 years old. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but get to a cardiologist and get it checked out just to put your mind at rest. Xx

I had a heart murmur that I`d had since birth apparently, it was found when I was 18 and fixed when I was 47 ! That was only because I developed an aortic aneurysm. My cardiologist decided to operate when the aneurysm got so large it was on the point of bursting, surgeon said he would do both op`s at same time to save me having to have 2 lots of surgery. That was 2 years ago and I`m fine now. Go see a Doctor/Cardiologist. Be safe not sorry. Good luck, Carole.

If it is a heart murmur, it means there is a problem with your heart valves. Either your valve had gotten narrower, or it has a prolaspe, meaning it cannot control your blood flow.
I hate to say this, but yes, there is a prossible chance that you will have a cardiac arrest. I advice you to see a cardiologist.
