What is heart murmur?

my son was born with a heart murmur the doctor said it just an extra sound when hi sheart beats my was born premature at 31 weeks

Murmurs are abnormal heart sounds that are produced as a result of turbulent blood flow, which is sufficient to produce audible noise. This most commonly results from narrowing or leaking of valves or the presence of abnormal passages through which blood flows in or near the heart.

I was born with a heart murmur also. The doctors said that it wasn't significant enough to hurt me though. My heart just beats a little different then most people. I hope your son is okay. Good luck!

My mother has a heart murmur and it has caused her no problems at all for her it was like a small glitch in the heart but not at all serious.
The murmur is a swishing sound made as the blood flows through any one of the heart's chambers or valves or even through a hole within the heart.

Many children are found to have murmurs at some point during their life's and it does not have any effect on the child's health at all.

If I remember correctly my mum told me there two murmurs functional and innocent and they are produced by a healthy heart and sometimes it goes as the child gets older, there are no requirements for special diet or restriction of activities or any special treatment.

So do not worry and I am sure your doctor would say otherwise if there was a problem.

Please see the website for more details. Abnormal sound heard on auscultation (A method of listening to the body sounds for diagnostic purposes, particularly the heart, lungs and foetal circulation. It may be:(1) immediate, by by placing the ear directly against the body; (2) mediate, by the use of a stethoscope) of heart or great vessels. Presystolic murmur., characteristic of mitral stenosis (A narrowing of mitral/bicuspid valve) in regular rhythm.

murmurs are basically a sound heard in the stethescope, usually caused by a heart valve not completely closing. they can range from harmless (which is what the vast majority are) to lifethreatening. i think theyre very common in kids, and if youre doctor doesnt seem concerned about it i wouldnt lose sleep over it, its most likely nothing.
