I have a heart murmur, and lately have had constant trouble breathing. should I worry?

About 4 years ago, my doctor told me I had a heart murmur, which was a harmless one. He also said it's not new and wondered why it hadn't been caught before. I've been diagnosed with Asthma even longer then that, but never tested. They asked me questions, gave me an inhaler and sent me on my way.
Recently, however, no matter what I'm doing, I have trouble breathing. I don't feel like I get enough air especially if I'm laying down. I don't take the inhaler since they never worked. I've also had heart pain in the last year.

I'm under some stress, but these symptoms came way before the stress. I'm 16, have a medical card and a very hard time with doctors, since every time I get one, I go to get evaluated the first time and get switched to someone new.
Should I be worried, and any clue what all this is?

-- a year ago, my resting heart beat was 60 bpm. Lately, I've been counting it from 70-120 resting and it's always really hard beats when it gets like that.

From my nursing experience:

The increased heart rate could be the cause of your shortness of breath; OR it could be your heart compensating to get more oxygen around the body that it needs.

I agree with the med student, you need further cardiac work-up. Stay calm, but don't delay. Whatever's going on they'll find it.

Meanwhile, don't lay all the way flat; try sleeping in a recliner.

see a heart specialist soon

seek professional help.

ANYTIME you are having trouble breathing, it is reason to worry. Get thee to a doctor ASAP; it sounds like your asthma is getting worse and your life could be in danger if you have a really bad asthma attack..

It's the asthma... not the heart murmur. I have had one my entire life... I am 34. I was diagnosed with asthma as a child, but grew out of it. I never "grew out of" the heart murmur. As I get older, it gets stronger.

If you had a problem - that coincided with the heart murmur - you would know it. It would be more than just a problem with breathing.

However, it's always best to speak to a professional, if you are really concerned.

Also, exercising is the best thing you can do for your body. Drink tons and tons of water, and eat a normal, balanced diet!

Any time you are having trouble breathing is a cause for concern. I would get it checked out.

Heart murmur's can get worse. Maybe you should get an echo-cardiogram to really asses your murmur properly.

You're entitled to a copy of your medical records. Get them and give any new doc a copy.

You need to be evaluated by an asthma specialist. There are some very good treatments but they need to be done on a consistent basis. Most involve a rescue inhaler and some sort of longer acting med.

And, yes, at your age you could be having a stress reaction, but let's get it checked out first.

Calm down darling, no, you sound like you're inhaling air and inflating too much air into your lungs (anxiety?), calm down and dont use the inhaler too much, it cause a rapid heart beat...a mumer is a small tiny hole between chambers in the heart (4 chambers) it's harmless unless it's very large then non oxegenated blood mixes with oxegenated blood and causes defecits in circulating oxegen. since there was no alarm when they found it I say there's a tiny murmer so dont fret, I've seen patients who are 90 that had it their whole ife...it's all normal so dont worry..and get calm!!

im sorry but u r havin the sypmtoms of pulmonary edema with left ventricular failure..consult ur cardiologist asap n restrict fluid intake..it'll make it even worse.

Maybe you should get more sleep. I know if I get less than 8 hours sleep one night, the next day I have trouble breathing.
Maybe do some meditation.
