Should i be worried about my daughter's heart murmur?

my daughter went to the drs. the other day she just turned one, and the doc, said she had a heart murmur. but then blew it off. he didnt even explain it to me, i made an appointment with the pediactrics heart dr. am i over killing it if the dr blew it off or am i doing the right thing, how serious is a heart murmur

A heart murmur is caused by one of the valves in the heart not closing completely. As blood is pumped through the heat, it moves from chamber to chamber. If the valve that keeps blood from flowing "backwards" doesn't close properly when the heart contracts, then a slight murmur can be heard by the doctor.

I have lived with one all of my life and never had any ill effects. They will tell you the leaky valve is a favorite place for bacteria to settle in and cause infection. Normally our blood is sterile so no bacteria will find its way to that place in your heart. However, if bacteria finds its way into the bloodstream, then you may have problems. One of the most common ways bacteria can enter the bloodstream is when a dentist is working on your teeth. You mouth is filled with bacteria and can enter the bloodstream with dental tools. Most dentists will require that you take an antibiotic several days before coming in for treatment.

There really is nothing you can do to repair a heart murmur. It is best to be certain your daughter is aware of her condition when she gets older. It is information a doctor will want to know if she gets a bad cut or goes to the dentist. Its one of those things that affected people must simply live with. A lot more things in this world are more dangerous than a heart murmur (like cigarette smoking)... so for you as a mother, it is best that you also "blow it off" and make sure your daughter is given the proper upbringing so she will be a happy and healthy woman later in life.

i think lots of people have heart murmurs and its no big deal. 50-90% of children have had a heart murmur at some point in time.
my sister has had one all her life and she's fine (she's 40 now.)
my boyfriend also has one and has never taken anything for it.
i know once in awhile they are serious...maybe you should ask your doctor why he/she feels your child's case is non threatening. if he doesnt provide you with what you think is a good enough reason, you can always go get a second opinion from another doctor.
i put it a link below if you want to read more about them.

you should learn as much as you can about it because to be worry will not help.

There are many factors influencing a heart murmur. what the childs EKG ic like, is there a family history of this, etc etc. I dont think you're overreacting. Many people have a heart murmur and live long healthy lives. if she's not having any other issues i wouldnt become a worry wart over it, but i would still go to the peds heart doctor just in case. Hope she does fine.

A heart murmur is not a disease; it is a sound that the doctor hears with a stethoscope. It may be normal, or it could be a sign that something may be wrong. Most heart murmurs are harmless. Some are signs of heart problems, especially if other signs or symptoms of a heart problem are present.

she'll probably grow out of it - don't worry.
