What is a heart murmur and is it serious? |
my doctor said i have a slight heart murmur. im only 15. is it serious? A heart murmur is just the noise the heart makes as it works, and most of them are nothing else. Some heart conditions do cause a murmur, but for the most part those are also not usually dangerous. If you consider the heart is just a pump, and all pumps tend to make some kind of noise- and that the noise doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the pump, you will have a little better feeling about this. Sometimes a doctor hears a murmur, sometimes they don't. Usually there is a slight problem with the coordination of the closing of the valves between the atrium and venticles, which will cause a noise. It can happen on the rare occasion, and for the most part doesn't happen at all- if you listen when it happens you will hear a murmur, and again listen in five minutes and hear nothing. If he says yours is slight, it means he can barely hear it, and not all the time. That may mean you have a slight prolapse, and nothing more. Nothing you need be concerned about unless you start having other problems. I assume you aren't having any shortness of breath, turning blue or feeling your heart thump or race in your chest. That might indicate something worth looking into. Otherwise, people live their entire lives with murmurs, even a mitral valve prolapse, and it never causes any problems at all. In fact, most people don't even realize they have one, until a sharp eared doctor happens to catch the sound on an exam. And the next time they visit, he won't hear a thing. I wouldn't be concerned if I were you. If he thought it were serious, you would be getting a lot more testing. It isn't broken, so nothing needs fixing, and you can relax. http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Dise... Some heart murmurs are harmless. Ask your doctor or ask your parents or guardians to ask your doctor what kind of heart murmur you have. |
