What is a heart murmur?

I just read about a dog that has a level 5 heart murmur. what does that mean?

A heart mumur is the sound of blood flowing through the heart's valves. It may be normal flow (although not if it is grade 5), flow through a narrowed valve into a dilated chamber or vessel, or flow backwards through a leaky valve. Murmurs in humans are graded from 1 to 6. Grade one is usually only heard by a cardiologist, according to what I was taught in school. Grade 6 can be heard across the room without a stethoscope. So, grade 5 is pretty loud.
