I Have Been Told That I Have A Heart Murmur,But It Doesn't Sound Like What Is Decribed As A Normal Murmur?

My new doctor discovered a heart mumur about a month ago.She said it was nothing .An innocent murmur, but my understanding of a murmur is a sound that happens between the lub dub .My mumur is an extra sound that is heard every fifth beat, like a lub dub a dub ,I am confused about the sequence and wondering if there is more that perhaps she didn't hear when I was there in her office. She diagnosed me as PTSD and said that the stress could be causing the mumur but lately if I get up too early and don't get enough rest I get a headache and feel like its hard for me to breathe.I also recently visitied a ent which couldnt find any type of artery blockage or ear problems but also said he heard turbulent blood flow. I can't really get a straight answer about what either doctor heard ,but neither seem to think that I had a problem.I was just wondering if the sound that im hearing every fifth beat is what they are referring to? Please only if you are medical or have direct knowledge of it?

Thank you for your answer (the med student) But is not occassional its like clockwork on the fifth lub-dub almost continous and why why woundn;'t two specialist recomend test?If in fact I needed it ?

First off, a murmur is simply turbulent blood flow and sounds like a 'whoosh'. The lub and the dub are valves closing, first the atrio-ventricular valves and then the aortic and pulmonary.

Broadly speaking, there are two kinds of murmur; systolic and diastolic. A systolic murmur, when the ventricles are contracting, is a murmur between the lub and the dub, and can be aortic or pulmonary stenosis or mitral or bicuspid regurgitation. A diastolic murmur is one between the dub and the lub and can be aortic or pulmonary regurgitation or mitral or bicuspid stenosis. There can also be murmurs that occur throughout the cardiac cycle.

Based on what you have described, it doesn't sound as if you have a murmur, an occasional third heart sound is suggestive of a number of other things. A diagnosis can only be made with the benefit of an ECG and maybe an echocardiogram.

Good luck, hope this helps.

EDIT:

To answer the follow up, I don't know, that's really beyond my knowledge. Some murmurs are harmless and are actually best left untreated. If two doctors are happy with you, I wouldn't worry too much about what someone like me says here. However, personally, I would want to be followed up by a cardiologist.
