Kidney Failure & Heart Disease?

My grandfather is 82 and weighs 280 pounds, He suffers from Diabetes and Kidney Failure, and Heart Problems.

He was admitted to the hospital last Wed with Anemia, loss of blood from retum, do to bleeding of the intestine, he also has an enlarged heart and kidney functions are not good.

His uraine is redish, brown and smelly. He has always been one to talk, now he is in and out of sleep some confussion, pain.

My question is this, he does not want dialysis, his heart is inlarged and he's ready to die, how long does he have left approx, I mean no one knows but the good Lord, but really.

He could linger for weeks , or months, even. but only Our Lord knows.

Please respect his wishes. don't let them force dialysis, to force him to prolong his diseased state beyond what he wants. Our Lord is merciful to the sick who suffer.

I have severe heart failure since a car struck me 1 yr ago. I'm middle-aged guy with no diabetes or other problems. the crash sent my heart into massive cardiac arrest, with bad damage in all portions of my heart muscle. I now am swollen and BURSTING with water in my legs. I gasp & wheeze upon any exertion.. doctors have NO REMEDY for the damaged heart muscle. this means I cannot come and go freely, travel and do things like before which may push me heart to over-exertion and another heart attack.

God is being merciful to him by allowing him to gradually succumb to multiple illnesses, naturally - without them forcing him to live on dialysis and machinery and drugs daily. that is not life!!!!

Let God's will be done . Please pray for me also.

I'm glad that you grandfather was able to live this long. I know that everything you listed are really serious health problems. My 20 year old friend has kidney failure and has to go to dialysis three days a week. My boyfriend has diabetes and has to take insulin shots a least four times a day. I believe if your grandfather stops dialysis he wont live very long because thats whats keeping his body going. Just like If my boyfriend stop taking his shots he would go into a diabetic coma and die. It's really sad that we all have to die one day. Good luck to you and your family.

It's hard to say exactly, but it sounds like your grandfather doesn't have a good prognosis, especially if the doctors thing that his kidney failure is severe enough to warrant dialysis but he's choosing not to have it (which is a perfectly valid choice, by they way, but it probably will shorten his life).
If that's the case, with acute on chronic renal failure, what sounds like heart failure, and a lower GI bleed, you're probably talking about days to weeks unless things improve. That's just a guess.

Im sorry to hear about your grandfather, no one is ever prepared for this, ive done nursing clinicals at a hospice facility where patients begin to shut down, considering what you have mentioned, he may last days to a few weeks, but 2 traits that we were taught is to check the soles of his feet, if they are red then blood is shutting down, and a strong indicator is the breathing, if the breathing sounds like a rattle , then there are 24 to 48 hours left. I wish you peace and strength.

My grand dad went through the same. He went on dialysis for awhile then stopped treatment. The doc gave him pain meds and stuff to keep him calm while he passed. My mother had to administer the drugs to him. He went through periods of lucidity and halucinations.. It took him awhile to pass and it was hard on my mother. But we all think it was better he go than live with the pain and suffering. I think watching someone close die is worse than dieing yerself. But its better than watching them suffer. I wish u and yer family the best and am sorry for your loss.
