Should heart patients that had corrective surgery take birth control?

ok, i'm 23 years old and never been on bc. i was born with a murmur, i was blue and had transposition. i had the last surgery when i was 5 and i've been fine since. i expierence palpitations from time to time, but my dr says it's nothing to worry about and i've had them for as long as i can remember. i also have mild anxiety that i take klonopin for.

i saw my cardiologist last year and he said he would not recommend for me to get pregnant, and if i did i would have to be closely monitored and said that bc would be a good idea. then i asked about the blood clots risks and if i would be at more of a risk for heart problems and he said no because the blood clot side effects had nothing to do with my defect when i was a child.

i talked to the gyno and she said she just puts ppl with heart defects or previous defects on a low dose.

i am nervous because i dont want to harm myself, but i dont want to get preg either..

anyone here with heart defects/corrected defects take bc? side effects?

since i cant figure out how to reply to answers on here..lol..let me add to my question.

my heart murmur is gone now, if not gone its not noticeable. on my last check up he said i looked perfect, everything looks normal. (normal for someone who had a heart condition corrected).

i just know im not the only person that was born with congential heart defects that wants to take bc...hoping to find someone with similar issues on here.

i would go back to my cardiologist and talk again before my gyno appointment on friday, but lack of money and insurance...

i dont trust condoms and im tired of worrying about it. it would be nice to not have to worry...also other personal reasons for my bf that i dont want to post on here.

i keep reading all kinds of different things..some websites say its fine to take them, some say different.

was just really hoping to get some reassurance that i wont keel over or something.

I'd listen to my Cardiologist first before anyone. Ask him point blank about the pill and you. You said that blood clots are not a risk for you, but did you come right out and ask about the pill? If a gyno who understands your heart concerns does prescribe them I'd bring the filled prescription to the Cardiologist and let him read exactly what you have been prescribed.

ok my dear....if you have an underlying medical condition it is safe to stay away from most tablets .If you take oral contraceptive pills there is a chance that it might increase the tendecy to develop clots. My question is why you do not use condoms....the other way is if you know your menstrual calender try to avoid during ovulation time.

Have you ever heard of the Adult Congenital Heart Association?

We've had SEVERAL members have successful pregnancies -- the thing you need to do is to find a GOOD cardiologist who works with Adult patients born with a Congenital Heart Defect, and discuss the issue with him/her. Not every Cardiologist can do this -- most adult cardiologists are trained to to treat "acquired" heart problems. In other words, plaque, hardening of the arteries, and all the problems that come with aging.

Register at the ACHA's website (it's FREE!) and use the clinic directory list to find an Adult Congenital Heart Defect cardiologist near you. Or ask for advice on the message board! You can have a heart defect and become a mother if you want to... but it can be tricky. You need to be sure that you have the right doctor to guide you.
