My 9 year old sisters heart rate has been at 160 for hte last 2 days.?

my sisters had a heart defect when she was born. the 4 chambers were not divided so they operated her twice. once when she was 3 months and then when she was like 3.

she has been on warfarin and sotalol ever since childhood. they stopped giving her sotalol two years ago.

2 days ago she fainted. she had been complaining for a week her heart beat was getting too fast. they put her back on the medicine but the heart rate has gone down from 180 to 160. she is in a hospital outside america so i have no contact with her.

does anyone konw what else can be done to reduce the heart rate and what are the damaging effects of having it so high for so long.

First of all, I am so sorry to hear about your sister. She may just need her medication readjusted to a higher level or a different pill . If medications do not help, then might have to consider an underlying SVT or certain cardiac problems such as WPW Syndrome that would have to be fixed with surgical ablation. I hope she is in a good facility with well trained staff. The damaging effects first would be Congestive heart faiulre/pulmonary edema from having the heart have to work so hard to pump blood around but hopefully they are monitoring her for this. God be with you and your sister.

I have "SVT" that stands for Super Ventricular Tachycardia. The symptoms sounds the same. My heart beat was up to 220 bpm. They put me on Atentalol- It's a beta-blocker. Good luck!

1. sign off the computer...2..tell your parents to find an emergency room...in that order

TAKE HER TO THE HOSPITAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! duh!

May God Bless Her, but check the thermometer, or a very simple test suggested by a doctor, including soothing if not an impending fever. Thanks.
