What happens when the structure and function of the heart are compromised by a congenital defect? RNs? MDs? |
thanks It depends on how adversely affected the pumping function is. In cases such as a mild case of MVP, the function of the heart is barely affected, however, if the leakage is significant, pumping ability is impaired, forcing the heart to work harder and faster, blood pressure lowers and ejection fraction is reduced, leading to breathlessness, fatigue, and enlargement of the heart. Other congenital problems such as a septal defect can cause similar problems, again causing the heart to work harder and faster. Then you have problems that cause too much blood to go to the lungs, causing pulmonary problems and conditions in which the heart fails to pump enough blood to the lungs, resulting in cyanosis. There are several other problems: this website might be able to help you http://www.lpch.org/DiseaseHealthInfo/He... Depends upon the defect. A small atrial septal defect would probably go undetected. On the other hand, a transposition of the great vessels may not be compatible with life out of the womb. There are literally hundreds of congenital defects concerning cardiac abnormalities. Some are benign, others very serious. |
