Does anyone have TMJ problems with hearing loss? Right now all we know is that my daughter has TMJ and hearing

loss? It is in medical terms a 'signifcant' hearing loss in her right ear. We don't know for sure if it due to the TMJ but that is suspected. She sees an ENT on the 23rd. She is 23 and we are both beside ourselves with worry.

So far we know TMJ Can cause hearing loss if the eustation tubes are blocked. But then what? There is very little information on this on the web. At least that I've found. So if the tubes are blocked - does that mean surgery? If the tubes Are blocked is that why her jaw is constantly hurting? We see a PT, she doens't eat hard food and has a bite brace.
She is worried about loosing hearing in her left ear as well.

TMJ is a problem with the temporal mandibular joint. This may be caused by inflammation to the joint, and can be exacerbated by opening the mouth too wide, chewing hard foods, malalignment of the jaw. It can refer pain up through the ear on the side of affect. TMJ alone would not be the "cause" of hearing loss. She may have a coincidental hearing loss on that side. If they are suspecting Eustachian Tube problems that may cause a middle ear condition of negative pressure and possibly fluid in the middle ear. In this case there is treatment for this kind of problem and the hearing loss would be temporary. If you are to have a hearing loss, it is better to have this kind of middle ear condition as it is easily treatable. Treatment may be as simple as some oral medications, and if that doesn't do the trick then maybe a simple surgical procedure that can be done in the office. My experience is that the docs will exhaust all the medical options before they resort to surgical options.

If she has an inner ear condition that may be more tricky. But from what you say, it doesn't look like they suspect inner ear problems. It is good you are seeing ENT. They will order a complete audiological evaluation that will determine the degree and nature of the hearing loss and develop a treatment plan based on those findings and physical findings from the exam.

Relax - I don't think it is serious, and all will work out.

Best place to get your answer is go to WEB MD,,,my daughter had it so bad they had to break her jaw..but didn't interfere with her hearing.
