I have hearing problem since last 2 months due to side effect of medicine. Is there anyway I can get it back?

According to doctor, I hv to use hearing aids which I want to avoid. I have taken streptomycin injection which, I think is the cause of my hearing loss. Please give me some useful suggestion as I feel very embarass to face the world.

The first thing to do is to stop any further use of streptomycin and related aminoglycoside group of drugs. Now onwards whenever you consult a doctor for any illness, ensure that you always inform him/her about your past hearing loss due to drug.

The second thing to do is to get your vestibular functions and audiometry done by a qualified ENT surgeon to assess the amount of damage already caused. It is also important to get your kidney functions assessed since it is likely that streptomycin toxicity is more if the kidneys are not functioning well. Renal tuberculosis may have been co-existing.

Generally on stopping the drug, hearing may improve though it may take a long time. Meantime avoid exposure to loud continuous noise and taking any ototoxic drugs. You may take extra vitamin supplements of B complex group.

If hearing defect is affecting normal social activities and your profession, you must go for a hearing aid after proper evaluation. You don't have to feel bad about using it and there are models which are small and well-hidden.

Ayurveda may have some head and neck therapies which may help.

Get an opinion from a professional, not yahoo answers. Make an appointment with an ear specialist, if need be get three opinions from three different specialists.

The injections cannot be the cause of the problem as the injection is only an antibiotic. Doc is the best person to advise in the matter. Pranayam are said to be useful for the condition but no personal experience.

sorry for your loss and depend on your eye more at least you still have your ability to see and to deal with the cover up with your hearing loss grow your hair longer on the side to cover up the hearing aid and good luck

Hi I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing hearing loss. I've just researched details on this injection and here is what I have found.

What side effects may I notice from receiving streptomycin?
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
鈥ifficulty hearing
鈥izziness
鈥eadache
鈥oss of balance
鈥ausea, vomiting
鈥uscle weakness or tiredness
鈥ain or difficulty passing urine
鈥ain or swelling at the injection site
鈥inging in the ears
鈥kin rash, itching and pain

What should I watch for while taking streptomycin?
Visit your prescriber or health care professional regularly and tell him at once if you have any hearing problems, or problems passing urine.

That is all that it really has on this antibiotic in particular.
My advice (I'm not a health professional) is to go to your GP ASAP. I know he's saying use a hearing aid, although try to ask more questions such as what you're asking us; will there be a way you can get your hearing back?

Don't in any circumstance let this hearing loss control your life - you need to learn to control it! It won't be easy but with support you will get there! Remember also that these details are from an internet source and cannot always be reliable.
