Why do people point fingers at those with mental disorders? |
yes, there are some people who go around and shoot people who have problems....but oddly enough, most truly do not. i'm bipolar and i have ADHD...i'd never consider myself a threat to the ones i love, even to those who don't like me. i want to work for the FBI, but after hearing something about a law that has or may be passed banning people with mental disorders to receive a liscensed gun, i doubt it will happen. does anyone else who suffers from a mental disorder feel the same? not everyone who are on meds for depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc. are a threat to society. am i just the only one who thinks this? No, you are not the only one who thinks this. The reason, I believe, is because they are ignorant of the facts. They dont understand the illness and they are scared. Its comparable to the way they used to treat AIDS patients. Ignorance is a terrible thing. they don't - it's all in your mind. hmmmmm they maybe a threat but it depends of the level of their mental disorders.... hey, ik you! =) Unless you aspire to secret agent status.... just get a desk job. I know what you mean, I have depression and Anxiety disorder, and sometimes I feel like everyone thinks Im crazy. Mainly I guess because they do treat me that way. lol They need a scapegoat. handicapped, psychological problems, born "ethnic" or female or poor and you can bet someone is going to point fingers lay blame or accuse. It is born from ignorance and fear and it is always easiest to blame the disenfranchised or at the very least the people who cant or wont defend themselves for whatever the reason. Prisons and neighborhoods across our "great" land are full of people that have not been diagnosed with a mental illness but surely have one, as most Americans supposedly do[I think that statistic is false and produced by the legal drug pushers] that have been given guns, there are those with out mental illness that have been given guns and have gone on to commit violence. Good luck, I have my own issues and refuse to own a gun and feel that our society would do nothing but improve if ALL the guns were removed, melted and kept illegal. by reading your question ,,, I don't feel that you are a threat to anyone.. that you do understand mental illness and have a great understanding about it.. I wish more people did.. I have a family member with mental illness.. unfortunately they are unable to handle the stress from everyday life.. I wish I could say that they could... I hope that you would be able to go with the career of your choice.. my family memeber will never be able to do that...you should fight for what you want and go for it... good luck.. I think that everyone is bipolar or at least has a touch of something. i have ADD. i dont make it a point to tell my friends b.c sooner or later theyll find out anyway b/c i sumtimes take adderall during class and they ask me about it and they look at me weird like im retarded or sumthin. i have to explain it to them like this, "ADD just means that i cant pay attention to boring people or activities and im kinda glad i have it b/c i know that my life will never be as boring as urs is." I'm a high function sz. I'm brilliant and a reasonable person... but technically.. i could be a threat. It doesn't matter that I haven't been, or that I am not now. I still am a potential threat, and since there may be a point that i can not (on my own) discern the threat that i am, the danger i possess is somewhat higher than the average person. I truly believe that those who go around pointing fingers at those with mental illnesses are those who do not have enough background information about the mental illnesses. I have a mental illness. I'm not afraid to tell people that I have a mental illness. I'd rather them know up front than find out from someone else. |
