Have you ever heard of anyone committing suicide after starting a new drug prescribed for mental disorders? |
I've just been diagnosed with ADD and Anxiety Disorder and I'm probably going to wind up having to take some antidepressants like Wellbutrin, Celexa, Ritalin, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Symbyax, etc. What are the chances these are going to make me "go off the deep end" wind up committing suicide? I want to survive long enough to tell my doctor it's not working! The issue with antidepressants and suicide is that depressed people want to die, however, they lack the energy and mental clarity to formulate or carry out a plan. Within a few weeks of starting antidepressant therapy, people begin to feel a little clearer in their minds and are able to plan. For some people, this leads to serious suicide planning and execution of that plan. That is why drug companies are reporting an increased incidence of suicide in their antidepressant commercials these days. Will the drugs cause you to committ suicide? No. If you are depressed, they will make your head clearer and more able to plan if you are intent on ending your life. Never begin using these medications without input from your doctor and consulting a therapist or counselor. Good Luck drs will moniter you. Give all your sharp objects and guns to a family member Only if you take too much or mix it with other substances. Take it as directed and if you start to feel severe anxiety before your next appt., call your doctor. Remember these pills take at least a week or two to start working and really become effective. The people who commit suicide after taking antidepressants are those who are extremely depressed and have considered killing themselves for quite some time. The reason why they haven't already done so is because they are so depressed that they don't even have to will to get up and kill themselves. Now that they are on antidepressants, it makes them less depressed but not enough so that they'd feel normal or better. It made them less depressed enough to actually have the will to plan how to kill themselves. That is why you hear stories of depressed people committing suicide after they are on medication. Such people have to be closely monitored when taking antidepressants to prevent this from happening. Make sure you have family or friends to help you along this process. Hey. I am on Lexapro right now for anxiety/depression. It has made me feel alot better, but you should contact your doctor if you start taking something and you feel even more depressed and/or anxious. I started out on Zoloft, and found out that it actually makes your symptoms WORSE for the first couple of weeks after starting, so I do not recommend taking this if prescribed by a family practice doctor. They are being pushed by Zoloft to promote their drug, and it is definitly not the best option. Anyways, expecially in young adults and teens, this medication might make you feel suicidal or more depressed, (but this is not likely, just in rare cases) if you do though, call your doctor or a friend right away. Hope this helps some :) I've learned from experiance that there are a lot of different meds and some have the opposite intended affect and it can be trial and error for you and your doctor. Keep somebody close to you informed on whats going on so they can intervine if you get worce instead of better. Even after finding the right meds it might take months to get the dose right. Good luck. You will survive. Good thinking, Mochalex. you can have that reaction with certain antidepressants. they all say that on the list of side effects. what you need to do when you try these drugs is you need to pay attention to how you are feeling, not so much that it drives you crazy but enough to see if you are feeling better worse or neither. talk to your doc about your concerns and they can help you out. go to your regular checkups and maybe make sure that you see a therapist. i know how it feels to start new meds and it can cause anxiety in itself. but everyone reacts to meds differently. i take effexor for my anxiety and that helps me. i hope that this helps and good luck I don't really know how to answer you. Clearly, you are very concerned about medications and the harm it can do to you. First of all, I'm not going to down play your concerns. They are valid. However, what side effects that happened to someone are very unlikely that they will happen to you. Well, is it possible that someone commits suicide while on a prescribed drug for ADD, depression or anxiety, YES. You might have read this on a medical site, but that doesn't made it apply to you. In fact, these side effects are extremely rare and get blown out of proportion. I'm not saying that these side effects can't happen to you, it is just doesn't happen that often. Just be careful and communicate with your doctor. There are lots of people on these drugs, most are doing well. |
