Why do doctors prescribe dangerous meds for ppl with mental disorders??

I dont get it, why are doctors allowed to give patients medicine for depression and other mental disoderders when the side effects to these drugs are known to be 100x worse. Then once those side effects kick in and the patient commits some crazy, out this world crime the doctor and society wonders want triggered the patient?? I would love to hear a logical answer!!!

The profits big pharmaceutical companies make. They are the most profitable legal business in the world!

The bribes they give doctors to prescribe their drugs.

Many of these drugs do not outperform placebos in trials, yet are approved by the FDA - which has a lot of people who are "former" employees of pharmaceutical companies on it. Hmmm.

Note that this problem is not limited to just psychiatric drugs or mental patients.

and I'd love to hear a logical question! Where on earth do you get your information from? seems to me you've been very ill informed

because they dont care. all they want is money

The side effects are not the norm. Years ago these meds did not exist and people were committed. Used correctly, combined with therapy and close monitoring by the prescribing physician is usually successful.

nobody wonders what causes these things they know. the problem is nobody knows how a person will react to different meds, 2 people with the same condition could be taking the same meds, 1 will function normally and the other won't. until you have been in the situation you wouldn't know.

Look here! Are you falling for this lying b.s. that the media is putting out there about antidepressants?! That is b.s. and you are only feeding the fire for more people around this world to believe this stuff. You're probably the type of person who goes around saying things about stuff you know nothing about! Please understand that the antidepressants aren't the real issue here, and either is mental illness! We live in a society where sex and violence have played centerstage. Where violence is "cool". Mental illness and medicine is not to blame! Fools and a**hole parents who don't spank their kids enough are! Letting their kids go around having sex, dressing like wh*res, and beating up on folks, and then laughing, and telling them how cute they are. Letting their kids talk back to them and their teacher, and then telling them how cute this is. THIS "DO WHAT YOU WANT BECAUSE YOU CAN" SOCIETY NEEDS TO STOP! Not our medicine that we need just to get by in our days without committing suicide, or not taking a shower, or being to d*mn scared to leave our own homes. Let's get real here, because I'm sick of this!

Because they are Doctors and they know what they are doing.

first of all the side effects are not 100 times worse for people with mental disorders. doctors prescribe these medications for people because the meds are documented as being beneficiary to the patient. you only hear about certain patients that commit violent acts, while at the same time millions of people who are on these meds are leading meaningful and happy lives. dont blame the doctors or the drugs. how about people take responsibility for their actions ever now and then.

Have you actually read the side effects on the medications? They happen in something like 0.001% of the people. What about the 99.999% of the people that these medications help?

Where do you get these facts? Sounds like maybe inside a box of cereal.

some people NEED powerful antipsychotic because they ARE psychotic. Sometimes it is the only way to control their behavior. you should worry about the people who arent on meds but should be.

Medication radically changed the life of people who are mentally ill. Nowadays, you can almost have a normal life if you suffer from such a pathology and take your medication. But, it's true, some of those drugs have strong side effects. Most of them can be corrected or don't last.
The actual problem is not drugs, the problem is diagnosis and pressure from the pharmaceutical industry. People just get prescribed the wrong medication. 2 years old kids with neuroleptics, for instance, makes no sense but it's pretty fashionable in modern psychiatry to make such prescriptions, to diagnose people with imaginary illnesses. Medicines aren't bad when they are given to the right patient, at the right time.

You might be interested to know that since doctors were forbidden from prescribing Paxil for depressed teens-there has been a huge increase in teen suicides.

There is a whole lot of research out there-and ask any depressed person for confirmation-that proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that prescription drugs that treat depression can basically give someone their life back. I suggest you read some first hand accounts of what depression is really like before you condemn something that has literally changed the course of so many lives from death and depression to life and hope. I'd much rather take an antidepressant than drown my pain in alcohol or street drugs, empty sex, useless "self help" books or dangerous cults that profess to have all the answers about psychology as they kill their believers. (try asking Lisa Macpherson how she felt before she died. She was depressed....)

Each patient is different. Sometimes a person with a mental disorder just needs therapy, other times they are so unstable or dangerous to themselves or others that strong drugs are necessary to control it. Most, I think, can benefit from a combination: drugs to alleviate the worst symptoms of mental disorder, making it possible to treat the patient with long-term therapies like talk therapy and electro-shock. A good doctor will put all the options on the table with the patient and his/her family, recommend the treatment they think best, but let them weigh the pros and cons before prescribing anything dangerous.

FIRST OF ALL
MEDICATION AND MENTAL DISORDERS DO NOT
MAKE PEOPLE CRIMINALS.
that's reallly offensive because i have bipolar disorder and ADHD and i take meds for both problems and i am FINE.
obviously you think the meds are dangerous and can make people kill other people because you don't have a mental disorder. MOST criminals aren't even people with a mental disorder. look that up. i've never hit my girlfriend, my friends, or my family not even my pets. my medication has made me a better person. it's not dangerous medications at all. i have ZERO side effects. antidepressants have a lot of side effects like drowsiness and headaches...wow, that makes some commit a crime!!! you should be more worried about sexual predators at schools and churches and making sure the world is drug free of weed, alcohol, heroin, etc. before you call people who take meds for their problems crazy, think how easy you got it...just cause people have to take medication to make them happy, doesn't mean it's dangerous.
