Health Insurance help needed...ASAP!?

Hi. I have no health insurance and am looking to buy. I'm 21, and I am no longer covered under my mom's plan...I have NO IDEA how to go about this because I've never been on my own until now. I don't know how all of that works...what's 'good' health insurance, how much, & how long I need to keep before i can cancel, etc.
Basically, completely health-insurance-illiterate, and I have no one to turn to, because my mom and I had a falling out.
Also, I cannot get some through my job since I only work part-time, and I'm a full time student.
I'm clueless about health insurance and need to get some soon...but it is so confusing!

PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks for the answers so far...
here's more info:
I live in California
I do not live with parents
Cannot get it through school since I'm graduating in a month.

thanks

This could be a blessing in disguise as there can be serious disadvantages to getting insurance through an employer IF you end up needing a lot of care (ERISA laws and insurance).

As you're healthy, try getting an HSA.

You can get assorted quotes, including for HSAs, here:

Get ALL the med care you can AT school NOW. Less likely to get jerked around. Make sure all vaccinations are up to date. Get good physical. Take advantage of any health ed--nutrition, exercise, anything--you'll pay big time once out of college.

You might be able to get student insurance for spring semester AND when you graduate, they MAY offer to give you your own policy if you're healthy enough and will quote you a rate. This could be a great idea. Check it out. Probably someone in the student health can help you figure this out. You want to take care of this ASAP.

Good luck.

If you are still living with your parents you can go on COBRA and continue on your moms plan but just pay more.

get a job that offers it...it is hella expensive you try to get it on your own.

Try and get something through your school..thats what I did while I was in college.

Check with your school. They usually have insurance companies you can go through. You can check on line also but not knowing where you are located I have no idea what companies to suggest.

Move to Canada or England

If you are under 25 and a full time student, you should still be eligible under a parents insurance plan. You should investigate that first. Secondly, surf the net for individual health insurance. Try Blue Cross Blue Shield, It is not cheap, and to make it the least costly, your deductible will be high. Sometimes as high as several thousand dollars. This means that you will have to pay the deductible out of your own pocket before your insurance will start to pay a percentage of the bills.

It depends on your state. I researched this for a long time, as I needed to go out on my own and get it myself. I googled everything under the sun and it took a few weeks, but I finally found one that I really like.
Make sure you compare deductible rates, coverage, etc. Once you get reading on it, you'll understand it more and more (it's confusing as heck at first!!)
You will want to make sure your doctor will accept whatever insurance you take as well.

It's not easy, it's not cheap, but stick with it and you will find what you are looking for!

call california blue shield and see what kinds of plans they offer. I work for a large company branded with blue cross blue shield and we offer a few income based plans to people in our state. it may be a place to start.
