Can hay fever irritate your vocal chords?

I am an opera singer and for the past few days my voice has sounded more tired than normal. I'm thinking it could be hay fever. I had hay fever for the first time in my life last season. I usually take Claritin 24 for it. Any suggestions?

Yes it can.

What part of the country (United States, I presume?) do you live in? I am an "amateur" singer (Church Choir, karaoke, etc.) and I live in the "allergy capital of the world," San Antonio, Texas. I would think that if this is your livelihood, you need to probably see an allergist and consult some professional expertise here.

Having had many sinus and allergy problems myself, the best thing I have found is to do a morning "nasal wash." Take a glass of water; heat it in the microwave for 45 seconds or so, add a teaspoon of salt and use the adult sized version of one of those plungers you can buy to get snot out of a baby's nose and shoot a plunger full of water up each nostril, over your sink each morning. It's a bit gross at first and you have to get used to intentionally putting water up your nose. But this has decreased the frequency of my sinus infections from about one every six months or so to one every two years.

Beyond that, I would see a professional allergist and probably get tested to find out what, beyond hay fever, you might be allergic to.

dont try to sing for a hilw and EAT CITRUSITY FRUITISTY

Try a humidifier and gargeling with salt water. Also drink extra fluids as the claritin will dry your system out.
