What good natural hay fever remedies are there?

My Fiance suffers from hay fever, she takes a spray for it but it's still really bad. What else can she do?

It is hard to pinpoint the exact cause of respiratory allergies, however, heredity does seem to play a role, as do environmental factors. Some evidence suggests that those who were breastfed as babies are less likely than those who were bottle fed to develop allergies.

Symptoms of hay fever are partly a result of inflammation that, in turn, is activated by the immune system. Because of this, a properly functioning immune system is crucial in the treatment of seasonal allergies.

Useful Herbs

CHAMOMMILE Tea is used to reduce duration of hay fever attacks.

EPHEDRA Relieves congestion & bronchial spasms.

EUCALYPTUS Used in steam inhalation to ease congestion.

EYEBRIGHT Tincture or capsules reduce hay fever symptoms.

GINGER Reduces inflammation, antimicrobial.

LICORICE ROOT Reduces inflammation, antiviral, antibacterial.

NETTLE Extract acts as an expectorant, reduces sinus inflammation.

ROOIBOS Has antihistamine properties. A tea is sometimes helpful in relieving symptoms.

ST. JOHN'S WORT Capsules are used to relieve sinus headache.

There are also some homeopathic remedies that are very helpful on relieving symptoms of hay fever.

Homeopathic Treatment for Hay Fever:

Allium cepa: Indications for this remedy include watery eyes and a clear nasal discharge that irritates the upper lip, along with sneezing and a tickling cough. The person usually is thirsty, and feels worse indoors and when rooms are warm, and better in fresh air.

Arsenicum album: A burning, watery, runny nose with a stuffy, tickling feeling during allergy attacks suggests a need for this remedy. Swelling below the eyes and a wheezy cough are common. The person may feel chilly, restless, anxious, and is often very tired.

Euphrasia: This remedy can be helpful if the eyes are swollen and irritated with acrid tears or pus. The nose also runs, but with a blander discharge. Symptoms are often worse in the daytime and worse from warmth, and the eyes may hurt from too much light. The person can also have a cough in the daytime, which improves at night.

Ferrum phosphoricum: This is a very useful remedy in the early stages of any inflammation. Taken when allergy symptoms start, it often slows or stops an episode. Symptoms include runny eyes with a burning or gritty feeling, facial flushing, watery nose, and short, hard, tickling cough.

Gelsemium: A tired, droopy feeling during allergies with a flushed and heavy-feeling face suggest a need for this remedy. A sensation of dryness or of swollen membranes may be felt inside the nose鈥攐r the nose may run with irritating watery discharge, with the person sneezing frequently. Aching in the back of the head and neck, a trembling feeling, and chills along the spine are often seen when a person needs Gelsemium.

Natrum muriaticum: Allergy attacks with sneezing, watery eyes, clear nasal discharge that resembles egg white, and a loss of taste and smell will all suggest a need for this remedy. The person may have dark circles under the eyes, be thirsty, feel withdrawn and sad, and act irritable if comforted.

Nux vomica: If the nose is alternately stuffed up (especially outdoors or at night) and running (indoors and in the daytime), this remedy may bring relief. Other symptoms include a teasing cough, a scraped or tickly feeling in the throat, and headache. A person who needs this remedy often feels impatient, irritable, and chilly.

Sabadilla: Long paroxysms of sneezing, itching in the nose with irritating runny discharge, a feeling of a lump in the throat, and watery eyes will all suggest a need for this remedy. The person may feel nervous during allergy attacks, and trying to concentrate can bring on drowsiness or headache.

Wyethia: Intolerable itching felt on the roof of the mouth and behind the nose鈥攕ometimes extending into the throat and ears鈥攕trongly suggests the use of this remedy. Everything in the person鈥檚 head feels dry and irritated, but the nose may still be runny.

apparently if you buy local honey, it helps hayfever, as it may contain the local pollen that may affect her. not sure how it works though

my dad smells honey suckle

I have heard that eating the local honey to your area helps build immunity.

Homeopathic preparations are VERY helpful to many people. There is a line of liquids from Bio-allers that works very well. Sabadilla is sometimes used, so is feverfew. Boericke and Tafel have hay fever remedies and so do Doslisos and Hylands. If you want to study further, I recommend Homeopathic Medicine at Home by Panos and Heimlich and Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicine by Dana Ullman. In Chinese and Naturopathic Medicine, allergies are usually about needing a liver or large intestine cleanse.

Licorice, Echinacea, and peppermint

Me too, I was told to buy local honey. The honey is made from the pollen that causes the allgery. Taking small amounts of the honey on a daily basis makes the body respond to it, it increases the bodies natural defences, (antigens) I think they are and stops the reaction. I think it goes something like that, the technical jargon. However, I bought some and used it daily, amazingly it really did work!!!! It hasn't cleared my symptoms but there is a definate improvement. It has to be local and from that area. What people don't tell you though is when you go on holiday or travel your symptoms will return as you will react to the foreign pollen

The best natural remedy is local honey- this must be from the area in which you live. Take a teaspoon at least once a day.It will help your body develop immunity to any pollen, mold, and other irritants that cause you problems. It helps me with cat dander as well as the above. You will also, over time, notice that you get fewer colds and flu symtoms. Give it a month or so before you expect results.

There are two homeopathic remedies that really help. Alum Cepa (made from red onion) is great for sneezing acompnaied by watery eyes. Order a 6x potancy and take four pills or granules as needed. Also the remedy Euphrasia (eyebright) is fantastic for watery, itchy eyes. You can order through ABC homeopathy. You should do some reading on homeopathy before you try anything if you are unfamiliar with it.

Nettle tea seems to help mine. I also use it for cooking like spinach. And stick it in stews. Once wilted you don't get stung. But when you harvest it make sure you wear gloves. Make some Stinging Nettle beer. IT'S REALLY LOVELY. Cold beer hot day is best.

you can get these Tissue Salts by NEW ERA which I tried & they are quite effective (were for me anyways)..
good health shops sells them & usually it says on the packaing what they are for (eg Hayfever) or if you ask they'll tell you which one is for hayfever.
Boots used to sell them but I don't know if they do anymore.

Locally grown honey.

I read this in an article and I went out and bought some. It was quite a bit more expensive than the grocery store brands. I got it at a health food store and it's almost twice as expensive, but it's not as if honey costs a lot either way.

I eat a teaspoon a day - either plain or in tea, and my hayfever symptoms are lessening daily. I've been doing this for about a month now. I've even stopped taking my daily Claritin that I've been on for 2 years.

Hope this helps!!

Put a little Vaseline (petroleum jelly) around the inside of each nostril...just at the bottom....this will catch the loose pollen and help.

I am afraid natural remedies will naturally fail. The one often quoted is local honey, it is of course quite useless, avoid steroid depot injections they are a sledgehammer with potential future side effects like osteoporosis.(Kenalog is the classic.)

She may well need to take antihistamines plus a local preparation for each area:

Opticrom/Zaditen for your eyes
Nasonex/Rhinocort for your nose
Salbutamol or even low dose inhaled steroids for your chest.
Other drugs which can sometimes help are singulair and in extremis low dose oral steroids. They at least are more controllable than the depot.

A friend of mine tried Chinese herbs from a good shop it was expensive but it worked. Make sure it does not clash with any other meds your gf may be taking. i have not heard of anything else that works.

Several people have already mentioned to try local honey. There are a growing number of reports to back this up. However the main thing is that you need the honey to be as natural or raw as possible, not a processed one. Also some people find that taking pollen granules helps. You can get it in jars, and simply sprinke small amounts on your cereal or similar.

get manurka active honey it is in good supermarkets costs about 拢5 but works and is also good for chesty or breathing probs, take in glass of hot water about tspn or so of honey plus slice of lemon, or spread on toast pancakes etc forgot simple tip smear vaseline under your nostrils helps to trap pollen
