Hay fever I have taken piriton and now feel so tired?

only seem to get it from tree pollen
any uk drug suggestion non drowsy
thank you

I used to be exactly the same when i took piriton so i found something else.
Try using Zirtek it is available over the counter and if it works for you go to your doctors and ask them to prescribe it you.
I have mine prescribed now as its expensive to buy it over the counter, you only get 8 tablets in a box and they cost 拢5.99 a time.
If you get it on prescription you get a box of 28 that's far better value for your money.
Hope I've been of some help.

Try the liquid form of benadryl.
My husband is a really bad sufferer and has the same reaction with piriton, we asked the pharmacist and this is what he recommended.
If not ask the Pharmacist at the chemist.

Hi, I suffer really bad with hay fever and have to take tablets all year round to control it. I've tried everything and I mean everything. The tablet I am currently taking, which I have prescribed by the doctor is Loratadine. It works great for me and is non-drowsy. Some people find that nasal sprays work well so give them a go and see. For me, they just make me sneeze, so I sneeze it all back out again so that's no good.

Piriton knocks my mum out cold for hours but she finds zirtec or Benadryl don't have the same effect. Personally, I'm a convert to Clarityn which has seen me thru' the last few summers with no sleepiness.

Firstly only about 50% of hay fever sufferers get total relief from antihistamines. The rest have to use local treatments often in conjunction, to treat their eyes, nose or chest.

Antihistamines divide into 2 basic groups:

1) Very old, 2-3 times a day, potent, sedative and very cheap.
2) Newer, once daily, less potent, less sedative (these still cause some sedation!) and more expensive.

There are a dozen in the second group, there is little to choose between them but mizolastine is said to decrease the number of patients who need local preparations.

I always put in my answer before I look at the other answers. I might be tempted to guess that among them there is likely to be at least one suggestion about using homeopathy and at least one advocating this weeks urban myth of local honey. Neither of these work, they are however harmless so you are welcome to test them out for yourself.

I have had allergies for 3 decades, and the first medicine I took was the US version of Benadryl, which is 'Nytol' here in the UK, and is marketed as a 'sleep aid'. It still works the best for me as far as alleviating my symptoms, yet it can/does cause drowsiness. Even though myself, it doesn't much now. It actually helps me feel more 'awake' in a sense because I can breathe through my nose.
I find that anti-histamines work the best for my allergies. Yet some non-drowsy anti-histamines have actually made me stay awake for 24 hours, and feel jittery. So I do think, it is up to the individual with regards to what anti-histamine works for them. Right now I use the 8 hour Benadryl (UK version) which does help. My allergy symptoms can be severe. I have tried several other prescribed anti-histamines, and nasal sprays
but have had bad side effects, or no relief.
I find adding sea salt to a bowl of steaming hot water, and sitting over it, and breathing the steam to be very useful! I do it in the mornings when I get up. I use soothing eyedrops too - not eyedrops for allergies though, and saline solution for my nose if I'm out. I carry it around. You can purchase a small bottle of saline solution (salt water) designed to put a few drops in your nose. Ask for it at the pharmacy. It's usually behind the counter.
I find witch hazel to be soothing as well, a little on cotton wool and gently used on my face and on eyes with them shut, not in the eye, but since I am not a doctor, I won't be recommending that. (disclaimer) Also, another thing to ask for behind the counter.
Flannels dipped in cool water, help the swelling around eyes and nose. Or a cool gel eye pad helps with swelling.
I also have been prescribed medicines for asthma. I'd recommend a visit to your GP, doctor.

You will feel tired - that's a side effect of piriton. Having tried conventional medicine - which doesn't cure but just suppress symptoms, please try homoeopathy. Despite the slagging off that the ill-informed "Dr Frank" gives, I've been given best answer for many questions about hayfever & have been contacted by those who gave me best answer to say that they've been thrilled with the results!
Hayfever can cause all sorts of symptoms - and how they present is as individual as the patient.
Try Homoeopathy for your Hay Fever. My phone starts ringing earlier each year as people are so fed up with the side effects of conventional medicine & all are impressed with the results from using homoeopathic remedies. Within about 3 years, the vast majority find that they no longer need to use anything as they are cured. There is no one remedy that I could suggest for your symptoms as you will find that your particular symptoms are quite individual to you - so you need an individual remedy. Please consult the Society of Homeopaths who will point you in the direction of a local practitioner. Go to http://www.homeopathy-soh.org/ You will be pleased with the results
