I have hay fever. My eyes itched really bad and I rubbed them. A lot. Now I have a problem.?

It seems like the outermost layer of the schlera--the white part--has detached from the eyeball. It moves when I blink. It looks like I have tears welling up in my eye, but I don't. What is it??? What do I do?

The sclera has a mormally is covered by a clear, mobile membrane called the CONJUNCTIVA. If the conjunctiva gets irritated or inflammed, it can swell making it more noticable. It can look like "jelly" on the eyes.

The conjunctiva usually swells in response to infection or allergy. In your case, the itching strongly suggests allergic conjunctivitis.

I'm sure you did no harm to your eyes. For the itching and allergic conjunctival swelling, try Zaditor or Alaway - these are over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops that are safe and effective for long-term use. Use 1 drop every 12 hours as it says on the label (ketotifen, the medication in Zaditor/Alaway, was available by prescription only just a few months ago.)

That should probably be enough, but you may want to add a redness-reliever, like Visine, for a short time to reduce the swelling on the eye surface. Redness relievers should be used for only 2-3 days at a time because you can get "addicted" to them (ie red eyes if you try to stop them.)

Good luck.
