Has anyone ever had a severe Vitamin D Deficiency? After being treated for it, how did you feel?

My doctor said my level of Vitamin D is only 15, and ideally, it should be over 40, with 30 being lowest on the scale. He prescribed 50,000 International Units of Vitamin D pill to be taken once per week. I am also hypothyroid (Hashimoto's Disease) and take synthroid, and have severe osteoarthritis and have chronic tendinitis. Please tell me if taking the Vitamin D greatly improved your health. Thanks so much!

Here is the tolerable upper inyake level for vitamin d and some more scientific literature supporting increased intake of vitamin d3.

I do know that vitamin d3 is more effective than the vitamin d2, so you may want to ask your doctor about that?

Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for Vitamin D
Infants 0-12 months - 1000 IU
Children 1-18 years - 2000 IU
Adults 19 years and older - 2000 IU

In 2006, three significant research papers were published in peer-reviewed medical journals by different respected authors, each coming to the same conclusion.

You need more vitamin D than the recommended amount for adults of 400 IU per day.
Bischoff-Ferrari鈥檚 article in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition recommends an adult intake of 1000 IU/day. His conclusion states 鈥渁 large majority of the US population could benefit from vitamin D supplementation.鈥?br>
A second significant article by one of the top bone health researchers in the world, Robert Heaney published in the Journal of Nutrition, says "Available data on metabolic utilization of vitamin D3 indicate a total daily requirement of approximately 4000 international units or twice the current tolerable upper intake level (UL)

A third comprehensive 2006 article published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings by Michael Holick concludes 400 IU per day should represent a minimum for vitamin D supplementation rather than a recommended daily amount.

So overall I think it looks like vitamin d is a very good thing
