What year was handwashing proven to be effective?

Sorry, all I know is that a man named Lister realized that microscopic germs were making people sick. He was persecuted/ridiculed for his belief and sometime after this the silly idiots realized he was right. This is where they got the name Listerine, for the mouthwash.

Look up Lister, or Listerine on the internet and see what comes up, that should give your dates and sources.

You CAN'T be serious... it has been known for almost 200 YEARS that handwashing is effective for disease control...
