How can I deactivate (kill) a virus?

I've heard conflicting information. Someone says that dishsoap destroys the virus's lipids, yet I read that it is the actual mechanical motion of handwashing that removes the virus.
My g/f has a cold. I want to keep my hands clean. How do I do so?
