Is this adequate infection control? I'm freakin out man!? |
I work as a CNA in a transitional care facility. A nurse told me that one of the residents that I take care of tested positive for MRSA in her urine. When she wets herself, the linens are sent to through the regular laundry & TED hose washed in sink. We are doing no extra precautions- just gloves & handwashing, and she still has a roomate that uses her toilet, and she also uses the common bathroom by the nurses' station. She has not been tested to see if the infection has spread to any other parts of her body, but she has been very lethargic and confused lately. She even fell asleep in her soup! She has a horrible cough, which I know can't be good. I talked to my charge nurse, and he said I shouldn't worry about it and 90% of all health care workers get MRSA. Its just a fact of life apparently! Is this normal? I thought MRSA required extra infection control. Please explain. I don't think she has the vancomiacin resistant strand, but I'm sure the nurse would have told me if she was. She should have her own bathroom facilities, the MRSA is in her urine and apparently she is not able to keep herself or her surroundings clean as you say she is incontinent. How irresponsible for your supervisor to say that. It is true many hcw test positive, but the lack of caring and precautions is very lax. The other residents are most at risk from this, because they are not strong and healthy, they could have serious problems when exposed to MRSA |
