That's drastic unless the doc said it was the only alternative you have.

Sorry, there are no pros - except sympathy if you roll that way...

only one hand to jack off with

pros-none cons-life sucks

you don't have to make excuses for not wearing your wedding ring

What pros could there be having your hand amputated??? What a weird question.

If your hand is not going to be usable from the accident then it will probably just get in your way if you don't have it amputated.

That would be something to answer after a long, long time of looking at prosthetic hands, seeing what you could afford and then finding out what function you'd have compared to the function you have now.

You also have to weigh in the costs and risks of surgery and the long, long time of learning to use a prosthetic hand. There are also phantom pains to consider. I keep reading of amputees who can still feel the missing limb, including itching and pain. The missing hand might still feel as though it's around even after it's gone.

If the hand is just sitting as a dead weight and will never, ever get better than it might be the best option - or it might be a bad option. It's such an individual question. Really, it's one I'd personally want to talk over first with a surgeon and then with people with prosthetic hands.

This is an amateur consideration of the problem, so there are many, many things I won't have thought of, because of being clueless.

The real question is how many years and how many operations will you have to go thru to gain how much function in your hand ?
If it's like 5,5 ,& 20% It's probably not worth keeping the hand.
Many years ago I went thru a similar mental journey as you are . i had shattered a heelbone in 40+ places . I was in constant pain .living on opiates I couldn't walk more than a block without being in agony .
I finally got to the point where I seriously wondered if keeping the foot was actually worth it.
Fate interviened and I found a great orthopod who had done a foot fellowship . Several operations and 15 years later i can walk miles pain free
What do your surgeons have to say about this ?
